Perfection
Perfection is distinct from attachment. Under UCC § 9-308, a security interest is perfected when it has attached and the applicable perfection requirements are met; the method depends on collateral and may be filing, possession, control, or automatic perfection.
Rule to remember
Perfection is the Article 9 status achieved when an attached security interest satisfies the applicable statutory steps for effectiveness against third parties.
Key elements and checks
- A security interest has attached to the collateral.
- The applicable method or automatic-perfection rule has been satisfied.
- Priority against specific competitors must then be analyzed under the relevant priority rule.
In the source’s words
“A security interest is perfected when it attaches if the applicable requirements are satisfied before the security interest attaches.”

Filing is common but not universal; possession, control, or automatic perfection may apply. Perfection alone does not always guarantee first priority.
